I’d like to ask what the approximate range distance (in meters) for the SX1272 assuming 915 MHz, max data rate (300 kbps?), and an outdoor environment. Thanks!

Hi,
We can assume a link-budget of approx. 113 dBm for a 300 kb/s GMSK modulated carrier (Tx Power = +17 dBm, Rx Sens = -96 dBm for 0.1% BER), however range will depend upon the propagation loss between the transmitter and receiver, which will be a factor of terrain, antenna height and gains, shadowing and building penetration margins, and noise interference over thermal at the receiver.
A simple path loss calculator is that used by IEEE 802.15 Tg4k and which uses the Hata model at 915 MHz. The assumptions are:
- GW antenna height = 30 m
- Endpoint antenna height = 2 m
- Antenna gain = 2.14 dBi
- Shadowing margin = 0 dB
- Building penetration loss = 0 dB
- Noise interference = 0 dB
Calculated Range:
- “Free Space” ~ 20 km
- Hata Open Space ~ 4 km
- Hata Suburban ~ 1.2 km
- Hata Medium City ~ 0.6 km
- Hata Large City ~ 0.6 km
