What is the approximate range distance for the SX1272 with 915 MHz at max data rate (300 kbps)?

I’d like to ask what the approximate range distance (in meters) for the SX1272 assuming 915 MHz, max data rate (300 kbps?), and an outdoor environment. Thanks!

Hi,

We can assume a link-budget of approx. 113 dBm for a 300 kb/s GMSK modulated carrier (Tx Power = +17 dBm, Rx Sens = -96 dBm for 0.1% BER), however range will depend upon the propagation loss between the transmitter and receiver, which will be a factor of terrain, antenna height and gains, shadowing and building penetration margins, and noise interference over thermal at the receiver.

A simple path loss calculator is that used by IEEE 802.15 Tg4k and which uses the Hata model at 915 MHz. The assumptions are:

  • GW antenna height = 30 m
  • Endpoint antenna height = 2 m
  • Antenna gain = 2.14 dBi
  • Shadowing margin = 0 dB
  • Building penetration loss = 0 dB
  • Noise interference = 0 dB

Calculated Range:

  • “Free Space” ~ 20 km
  • Hata Open Space ~ 4 km
  • Hata Suburban ~ 1.2 km
  • Hata Medium City ~ 0.6 km
  • Hata Large City ~ 0.6 km
